In the central area of the temple, there is an image of Maasaniamman resting on her back and is about 15 ft long. The image is painted in different reflecting colours. Tuesdays and Fridays are considered to be very auspicious to Maasaniamman. At the time of Krithigai and on new moon days, devotees have special poojas conducted at the temple.
According to legends, the temple was constructed in remembrance of a girl, who ate a mango from a tree which was very dear to King Nanan. The king sentenced the girl to death for daring to eat the mango of this tree. Local people made a female statue using sand from the girl’s grave and worshipped it as ‘Masani’. It is also believed by the people that Lord Rama visited this temple in search of Sita, was mesmerised by the power of this temple and sat here for meditation.
