The city is home to a large number of public and private universities. Complutense University of Madrid, established in 1293, is one of the oldest universities in the world.

Madrid is also home to Real Madrid football club, one of the best known and the most valuable sports team in the world. They own the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, an all-seater football stadium in Madrid.
