Queenstown is big on fun, big on beauty and big on winter. The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival is the best way to experience it all – it is New Zealand’s biggest winter party!
Dates: 19–28 Jun
Where: Queenstown
Entry: Some events and activities are ticketed. See event website for details.
Event info: www.winterfestival.co.nz
Top reasons to go:
It started in 1975 when a group of locals decided that the start of winter was a good excuse to party. Today the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival
is an iconic event that has grown to become the largest celebration of
winter in New Zealand, some would say even the Southern Hemisphere.
The
10-day festival features a variety of events that stretch from
Queenstown’s spectacular mountain slopes to its lively town centre. The
festivities kick-off with the American Express Opening Party and Fireworks (19
Jun). Entertainment for this year’s gala includes Margaret Urlich,
Debbie Harwood and Annie Crummer who join The Band of Gold to perform
top hits. The opening party is followed by an action-packed programme of
mountain races, street parties, fireworks, international and local
acts, jazz and comedy, Mardi Gras, family fun and plenty of quirky
action up the region’s legendary ski slopes.
The American Express Winter Wonderland Ice Rink (open every day of the festival) is the heart and soul of the festival and a hit with all ages. Mountain Bikes on Snow (20 Jun) is a fiercely competitive and fun event held at Coronet Peak. Don’t miss the iHeartRadio Day on the Bay with the legendary Hits 90.4 birdman competition. The Hits 90.4 Downtown Day
is another event full of laughs and excitement with the Drag Race being
a much-awaited highlight. The fun and festivities continue with the
event wrapping up on 28 June with the Auckland Airport Community Carnival, a good old-fashioned style street party, and the Slopestyle Invitational on The Remarkables along with other events.
