The ancient fortress town of Bonifacio has centuries of crashing waves to thank for its precarious position – the limestone cliffs below have been gradually eroded away to the point that the citadel looks poised to topple into the sea. Located on the southern tip of the French island of Corsica, it’s the island’s oldest town, having been founded in AD 830.
